Why elope in Garden of the Gods?

If you're dreaming of a jaw-dropping, stress-free Colorado elopement, Garden of the Gods might be the perfect place for you.

With its iconic red rock formations, stunning views, and dozens of photo-worthy spots, this free and wildly photogenic park is one of the most popular elopement locations in Colorado — and for good reason.

As a Colorado elopement photographer who lives just 15 minutes away, I’ve photographed countless elopements here and know the ins and outs of making your experience unforgettable. Here’s everything you need to know if you’re planning to elope in Garden of the Gods.

Why Elope in Garden of the Gods?

It’s absolutely beautiful. Towering red rocks, mountain views, winding trails, and open skies — it feels like stepping into a dream.

It’s free! No permit fees, no entrance fees, and even the parking is free.

It’s easy to access. Located in Colorado Springs, Garden of the Gods is just over an hour from Denver and only minutes from charming downtown areas and places to stay.

Whether you're planning something spontaneous and simple or a styled, intentional elopement, this spot gives you so many options without added stress or cost.

When’s the Best Time to Elope Here?

Garden of the Gods is popular year-round, but that means it’s almost always busy — especially around sunset. Here’s how to get the most privacy and best lighting:

Weekday Elopements:

If you're not tied to a weekend, eloping on a weekday is a great way to avoid crowds and have a more intimate experience.

Sunrise Elopements:

For the most private and peaceful setting, I always recommend sunrise. The light is soft and golden, the park is nearly empty, and the views are unreal. Just be prepared — in the summer, sunrise can be very early (around 5:30 AM), so it’s a great choice for early birds!

Sunset Elopements:

Sunset is beautiful too — just know you’ll likely have other people around. As your photographer, I’m experienced with editing out background distractions and finding tucked-away spots to create the feel of a private moment.

Where Should You Elope in Garden of the Gods?

The park has over a dozen amazing ceremony and photo locations, and some are far more private than others. I’ve explored nearly every trail and lookout over the years and can recommend the perfect spot based on:

  • Accessibility for you and your guests (if any)
  • Type of scenery you love
  • Time of day and lighting
  • Your vibe — adventurous, romantic, bold, or minimal

Working with a Colorado wedding photographer who knows the park well is key to making your day feel smooth and relaxed.

Do You Need a Permit?

Nope! One of the best things about Garden of the Gods is that you don’t need a permit to elope there — as long as your ceremony is simple and doesn’t involve big setups like arches, chairs, or amplified sound.

That means you can bring your officiant (or self-solemnize — yes, that’s legal in Colorado!), say your vows, and explore the park for dreamy portraits, all without red tape.

Note: Some rules apply about where you can stand or set up. I’ll help you navigate that to stay respectful of park guidelines.

Tips to Make Your Elopement Smooth and Stress-Free

  • Opt for weekdays for fewer people and easier parking
  • Sunrise = privacy + dreamy light (and cooler temps in summer)
  • Wear good shoes — some photo spots involve short hikes or uneven terrain
  • Bring layers — Colorado weather changes fast
  • Hire a local photographer who knows the best routes, secret spots, and lighting tricks
  • Celebrate your way — picnic, champagne pop, first dance, or just a walk among the rocks

Final Thoughts

Eloping in Garden of the Gods is more than just a ceremony — it’s an experience. With epic views, no permit hassle, and endless photo opportunities, it’s one of my favorite places in Colorado to document love stories.

Whether you're looking for a simple sunrise vow exchange or an adventurous, all-day elopement with stops across the park, I’d love to help you plan a day that feels personal, fun, and completely you.
